Mason CAN relies solely on donations and grant funding to build a college-going culture. Since 2016, donor support has allowed us to offer continuous programming to students across five school districts. Some of our programming highlights include the College & Career Expo, College Connection information sessions, and our college visits. This year, 700 students connected with statewide college and local business representatives at our annual College & Career Expo. We also offered monthly College Connections information sessions, introducing 9th-grade students to college concepts, professors, and career exploration. Finally, thanks to grant funds, we were able to support two college visit trips for area juniors and seniors from MCE and LHS to visit Ferris State, CMU, and GVSU.
The Mason County CAN and Promise collaborate on two main action groups: To College & Through College. Each team works together with WSCC admissions and local high school counselors to highlight any issues and opportunities to a.) help more local students get to college, and b.) prepare students with the academic and financial knowledge of resources for getting through college.

For our current initiative, Oceana & Mason College Access Networks are developing a career exploration guide focused on high-demand healthcare careers. Local partners are invited to advertise in the guide and support student access to training and future careers. Join us in building brighter futures!

In order for students to go to college, they have to believe they can succeed. While many students opt for pre-college experiences like CTE or Dual Enrollment, the reality is that a significant number of students don't know how important those opportunities are, or don't have access to those opportunities because of other classes needed. For those students, Mason CAN has worked with MCE and MCC high schools and WSCC staff and faculty to develop the 9th grade College Connections program. Students meet monthly with Mason CAN and WSCC staff to learn about college concepts, explore college subjects, and meet Professors who teach them mini-lessons. Our hope for this program is that more students can see themselves as college material through more college knowledge and positive experiences with college representatives, so that they'll make informed choices about pre-college opportunities and will consider a post-secondary pathway as a future possibility.
